Former Austin High and MLB Star passes away

Don Baylor (1967) died Monday morning in Austin at age 68. The first African-American baseball and football player at Austin High, Baylor was drafted out of high school by the Baltimore Orioles. His stellar baseball career included a World Series ring with the 1987 Minnesota Twins, an All-Star appearance, an AL MVP award, three Silver Slugger awards and the Roberto Clemente Award. Following his outstanding playing career he managed the Colorado Rockies and was the NL Manager of the Year in 1995. He was inducted into the California Angels Hall of Fame.

Lady Maroons in the District Drivers Seat

The Lady Maroon basketball team is dominating their first season in District 25-5A with a 10-0 record. With a 27-5 overall mark and wins over Westlake (45-39), LBJ (61-31), and Hays (50-46 OT), the Lady Maroons are one of the top teams in Austin. And with a second win over LBJ (8-1 in district) on January 31st, they will clinch the district championship.

Meet your NCAA All-time Pass Receptions Leader

Isaiah “Zay” Jones (’13) established a new NCAA record with 399 career pass receptions this season. The East Carolina standout receiver drew positive reviews from NFL scouts at the Senior Bowl practices this week.

Isaiah Jones now 2nd all-time in NCAA receptions

With 29 catches for 185 yards in East Carolina’s victory over UConn, former Austin High receiver Isaiah “Zay” Jones moved into 2nd place on the all-time NCAA reception list. With 355 catches in his career, Jones passed former Oklahoma’s Ryan Broyles and now trails his former teammate Justin Hardy.

McLellan leads Zags to Sweet 16

Austin High alum Eric McLellan (’11) scored 22 points to lead Gonzaga past Utah in the 2nd round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Eric shot 9 of 12 from the field, 2 for 2 from 3 point range, and added 5 rebounds and 3 assists. 11th seeded Gonzaga has now knocked out 2 higher seeded teams by turning back 6th seed Seton Hall in Round 1 (68-52) and 3rd seeded Utah in round 2 (82-59). Eric scored 9 points against Seton Hall.

Eckert pitches in NCAA Regional

Travis Eckert (’12) took the long road to pitching in the 2015 NCAA Baseball Regionals at Dallas Baptist. After a stellar senior year where he earned 3rd team All-State honors as an outfielder, the Austin High grad pitched at Temple College posting a 3-4 record with a 6.05 ERA.
He then transferred to Clark College in Washington where he suddenly blossomed. With a 10-1 record, 70 strikeouts in 96 innings, and ERA of 1.20, Eckert drew the attention of the Oregon State coaching staff where he went to play for his 3rd team in 3 years.
The first year Beaver posted a 6-2 record in 2015 with an ERA of 4.08 capped with a start in the NCAA Regionals, taking the loss against Dallas Baptist.

Selena Hernandez (’11) was named the Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week after going 3 for 3 with 2 HRs, 4 runs scored and 3 RBIs against the University of Texas.

Cayleb Jones has huge Fiesta Bowl

Cayleb Jones caught 8 passes for 117 yards but it wasn’t enough as Boise State defeated Arizona 38-30 in the 2014 Fiesta Bowl. The former Austin High Maroon wide receiver became the go-to man for freshman quarterback Anu Solomon and nearly helped the Wildcats overcome an early 21 point deficit. Trailing by 8 points with 25 seconds to go, Jones made a spectacular 43 yard catch to put the ball on the Bronc’s 8 yard line. But Arizona failed to get the ball to the end zone on the final two plays.

Jones, a sophomore, caught 65 passes this year for 902 yards and 9 TDS.

Isaiah Jones catches 8 passes in Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl

Isaiah Jones capped a successful freshman season at East Carolina by catching 8 passes for 48 yards in East Carolina’s victory over Ohio University in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in St. Petersburg. For the season, the former Maroon standout was the Pirates 2nd leading receiver with 54 for 556 yards.
